Vibrant Planet Goes to DC: How Wildfire Mitigation Can Keep Communities and Ecosystems Intact

At a recent hearing for the House Committee on Natural Resources, leaders advocated for more cohesive use of technology to mitigate our country’s growing wildfire risk, a central component of the Fix Our Forests Act. Because today, thousands of communities across the West are in the 98-100 percentile of fire risk which means catastrophic wildfire like we saw in Lahaina, Altadena, and Paradise, CA, is imminent

During the hearing, our CEO Allison Wolff was asked to testify how innovative risk forecasting and planning tools, like Vibrant Planet, can support strategic, actionable investments in risk mitigation to keep communities and their surrounding ecosystems intact.

Watch her testimonial:

In a post-fire analysis of the recent Eaton Fire in Altadena, CA, she shared how an investment of $9M in strategic fuels mitigation projects could have slowed the fire and allowed fire fighters more time to defend the community, potentially avoiding up to $40B in losses.

By our estimates, if deployed nationally, Vibrant Planet can be used to save $180-$250M per year in taxpayer dollars just with more efficient wildfire risk planning. And that’s not counting the trillions in avoided losses to communities, ecosystems, and natural resources.

As founding members of the Association of Firetech Innovation, spun out of Megafire Action, we're ensuring Congress is aware of proven technologies that are ready to go to scale to help fire management agencies address risk and fight fires more safely and effectively.
